The Ghana Airports Company Ltd (GACL) has shut down Terminal One at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) due to an alleged debt of approximately $3 million owed by McDan Aviation, the private jet services operator.
The terminal, which has been in operation for private jet services for the past three years, was previously used for domestic travel services within Ghana.
According to reports, the debt accumulated over a period and includes land leases, rentals, and terminal charges.
This is not the first time the GACL has initiated a move to shut down the terminal over debt, indicating a long-standing issue between the two parties.
The allocation of Terminal One to McDan Aviation for private jet services was made possible after the opening of Terminal Three, which took over international services at the airport.
Terminal Two was then reassigned for domestic travel services, paving the way for Terminal One to be repurposed for private jet operations.
The shutdown of Terminal One is likely to impact private jet services at the KIA, and it remains to be seen how McDan Aviation will resolve the debt issue with the GACL.
The GACL’s decision to shut down the terminal highlights the importance of timely debt payment and the need for operators to fulfill their financial obligations to avoid disruptions to services.
