
A former Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service in connection with a violent clash during a football match that resulted in one death.
The incident occurred on February 2, 2025, during a match between Nsoatreman FC and Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC at Nsoatre in the Bono Region.
Two other suspects, Agyemang Duah Owusu and Kyeremeh Joseph, are also in police custody, assisting with investigations.
According to a police statement issued on February 3, a search of Owusu’s room uncovered two dresses with suspected bloodstains and an MP 23 pistol with 15 rounds of ammunition.
Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and the leadership of Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC, assuring them of a comprehensive investigation.
A special team from the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters has been deployed to assist the Bono Regional Police Command in the ongoing investigation.
The football match, which ended in a 1-0 defeat for Kotoko, was marred by heated confrontations and violent scenes between rival supporters. The situation escalated when players clashed, prompting the referee to issue four red cards.
