The government has announced plans to reinstate public sector workers who were wrongfully laid off during the transition period following the change in administration.
Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, revealed that a special committee has been established to investigate the circumstances surrounding the dismissal of 12,000 workers hired shortly before the change in government.
The committee, co-chaired by Mr. Pelpuo and Deputy Chief of Staff Nana Oye Bampoe, will verify the legitimacy of appointments and ensure that those properly employed are reinstated without delay.
“We are determined to make sure that no one who was legitimately employed through the correct public service procedures is unfairly removed from their position,” Mr. Pelpuo said in an interview on Joy FM on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
The investigation will also address irregularities, including false documents and improper hiring practices, which led to some dismissals. The committee will identify those wrongly dismissed and those whose employment did not comply with established procedures.
Mr. Pelpuo emphasized the government’s commitment to fairness and transparency, noting that the President has instructed a thorough investigation to ensure a fair and impartial process.
“We understand the impact this situation has on workers, particularly those who have been in service for a long time,” Mr. Pelpuo said during the interview. “The President has instructed that we thoroughly investigate these cases, and we will ensure the process is fair and impartial.”
The investigation is expected to conclude within the next week, bringing clarity and fairness to those affected. The government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving employment practices in the public sector, prioritizing the welfare of Ghanaian workers.
