A doctors’ strike has brought uncertainty to the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), one of the largest healthcare facilities in Northern Ghana.
The strike, which began on Thursday, April 24, 2025, is in protest against the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, and the MP for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhiyini.
The Doctors Association of TTH (DATTH) has announced the indefinite suspension of emergency and outpatient services, effective immediately. However, inpatient care will continue for current admissions until they are safely discharged.
The strike is a culmination of rising tensions between the hospital’s staff and government officials. The dispute centers around a recent patient death, which the family claims could have been prevented with timely medical care.
The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has previously condemned the dismissal of TTH’s CEO, Dr. Adam Atiku, and demanded an apology from the Health Minister, further straining relations.
The DATTH is demanding an unqualified apology from the Minister and MP for their conduct during a recent visit to the hospital.
Additionally, the association is calling for the hospital to be restocked with essential supplies and for the facility to be retooled.
The strike’s impact is likely to be significant, with thousands of patients potentially affected.
