Rashid Tanko Computer, CEO of Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC), has leveled serious allegations against the New Patriotic Party (NPP), claiming they are responsible for bringing Chinese nationals into Ghana for illegal mining, known as galamsey.
Speaking on GTV’s Breakfast Show, Tanko alleged that top NPP officials, including national executives and party leaders, are directly or indirectly involved in the illicit trade.
“The NPP brought them,” Tanko stated emphatically. “Go to the mining sites where these Chinese were arrested, and you will find out that they are owned by top NPP members.”
Tanko referenced a letter reportedly written by a former NPP chairman to the President, detailing government appointees’ involvement in galamsey operations led by Chinese nationals.
He emphasized that to effectively combat galamsey, the government must hold top officials accountable, saying, “If the government is serious about fighting galamsey, they should deal with the top people involved – not just parade a few arrests on camera.”
Tanko also criticized the practice of detaining arrested foreign nationals at the state’s expense, advocating for deportation instead.
