The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has expressed concern over the potential implications of removing Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, urging President John Dramani Mahama to exercise caution in the matter.
The call comes after the Chief Justice was suspended following the determination of a prima facie case in response to petitions seeking her removal from office.
Addressing the 2025 May Day Celebration on May 1, TUC Secretary General Joshua Ansah emphasized that the decision to remove the Chief Justice could have far-reaching consequences for the country’s democracy.
“Mr. President, Organised labour is duly concerned about this development. Mr President, these petitions set the country and its democracy on a slippery slope,” he said.
Ansah advised the President to proceed cautiously, warning that the decision would be consequential for Ghana’s democracy.
“We advise Mr. President that you hasten slowly and proceed cautiously on this matter. Your decision will be consequential for our democracy,” he cautioned.
The TUC Secretary General also criticized the government for failing to take decisive action against illegal mining, known as galamsey.
