Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called on the judiciary to unite in defense of their institution amid growing concerns over the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Speaking at the “Save the Judiciary” protest, Afenyo-Markin described the suspension as a direct threat to judicial independence and democratic stability.
“The judiciary is our last hope, and we believe that what is happening undermines our democracy,” he said.
“Maybe today it is Torkornoo, tomorrow it may be you. You don’t serve at the whims and caprices of a political party and a government” he added.
Afenyo-Markin urged the judiciary to put aside individual differences and defend their institution, emphasizing that the Council of State has failed the government.
The NPP and its allied parties presented a petition at the Supreme Court as part of the ongoing protest.
