Retired Supreme Court Judge, Justice William Atuguba, has launched a scathing attack on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over its stance on the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. According to Justice Atuguba, the NPP’s actions are hypocritical and lack moral authority.
The NPP recently organized a demonstration in Accra, demanding the immediate reinstatement of the Chief Justice. The party argued that President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to suspend her was unconstitutional and threatened the independence of the judiciary.
However, Justice Atuguba, in an interview with Joy News questioned the NPP’s credibility on matters of judicial independence, citing their actions while in office.
“How were they when they were in office? How did they perform? Acting transparently in the interest of the people, did they do that? What!” he said.
Justice Atuguba’s criticism of the NPP stems from their past behavior towards the Supreme Court. He pointed out that while in office, the people often referred to the Supreme Court as “unanimous FC” on social media.
“Before the elections, it was a common parlance on social media where the Supreme Court was being described as ‘unanimous FC’, was it President Mahama who was doing that?” he asked.
The retired judge further questioned the NPP’s actions while in office, asking what steps they took to address issues related to the judiciary. “They were in office; what steps did they take?” he added.
Justice Atuguba expressed concern about the lack of public interest in Ghana’s political space, describing the NPP’s actions as “pure hypocrisy.”
“These are the kinds of things I just hate. That is pure hypocrisy. The exclusion of public interest in our political space is very troubling,” he said.
