The Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting safe and structured labour migration through a technical meeting with the Ghanaian-European Centre for Jobs, Migration and Development (GEC).
Chaired by the Minister, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, the meeting focused on reviewing current projects and exploring new ways to strengthen collaboration between Ghana and the European Union, particularly in labour migration, job creation, and the reintegration of returnees.
The GEC, a joint initiative supported by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the EU, has been a key partner in this effort.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Pelpuo thanked the GEC for its continued technical and financial support. He noted the progress made in areas like skills development, advisory services, and public education on legal migration pathways to Europe and beyond.
He stressed the need to build on this momentum by strengthening bilateral labour agreements, establishing a dedicated Labour Migration Desk within the Ministry, and supporting more migration-related activities such as job fairs and awareness campaigns.
The GEC team shared updates on ongoing projects, including the Global Skills Partnership led by GIZ, and an upcoming implementation agreement.
Discussions also touched on the Ghana-Germany government-to-government labour mobility framework, which is expected to open up further job placement opportunities for Ghanaians.
The meeting ended with an open discussion where participants shared practical ideas and asked questions about the direction of migration policy.
Dr. Pelpuo wrapped up by thanking the GEC once again and reaffirmed Ghana’s goal to ensure labour migration contributes meaningfully to national development while expanding decent work opportunities for citizens through strong international partnerships.
