The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has successfully repatriated 925 undocumented migrants following a recent operation in Accra.
The migrants, predominantly Nigeriens and Nigerians, were arrested during a major swoop on May 16, 2025, for engaging in street begging.
In a statement issued on May 19, the GIS confirmed that the repatriation process, which began on May 17, had resulted in the return of 819 Nigeriens and 106 Nigerians to their respective home countries.
According to the GIS, a total of 2,241 persons are currently being held at designated holding centers. The breakdown of nationalities is as follows: 2,073 Nigeriens, 138 Nigerians, 28 Burkinabes, 1 Guinean, and 1 Malian.
The GIS emphasized that the affected immigrants underwent thorough profiling and security screening in line with standard operating procedures.
“Immigrants were also segregated based on their gender and age, in line with international best practices,” the statement added.
The Service assured that the needs of persons in detention, including meals, were being provided for. A clinic is also on standby to provide medical services if necessary.
The GIS stated that efforts are ongoing to remove the remaining undocumented migrants picked up during the exercise. “At the time of this release, 925 persons have been successfully repatriated, and processes are underway to remove the rest,” the statement concluded.
