The Member of Parliament for Sagnarigu, Attah Issah, has criticized former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for attributing the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi solely to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
In an interview on Channel One Newsroom, Issah emphasized that the cedi’s performance is influenced by multiple factors, including central bank interventions, fiscal discipline, and global economic trends.
He accused the NPP of selectively taking credit for positive outcomes while shying away from responsibility during challenging times.
Attach Issah highlighted the contribution of the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, particularly its debt restructuring program, which he believes has indirectly supported the cedi’s recent appreciation.
“You cannot discount the impact of the debt restructuring programme undertaken by the previous government in terms of fulfilling IMF conditionalities,” he said.
The MP noted that the debt restructuring program saved Ghana approximately $4 billion, which would have otherwise put pressure on the cedi.
He concluded that the outcome of the 2024 election would be a more significant factor in determining the government’s economic policies than attributing credit for the cedi’s appreciation to a single administration.
