The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has expressed deep concern over the increasing number of attacks on teachers across the country, criticizing the Ghana Education Service (GES) for its silence on the matter.
GNAT General Secretary, Thomas Tanko Musah, warned that the situation could escalate if not addressed promptly.
Recent incidents include a teacher being stabbed by a student in the Ashanti Region and a physical altercation between students and a teacher at Accra High Senior High School.
Mr. Musah stated, “We are waiting for a day that there will be an explosion in one particular school, let us hear somebody in this country that will blame a teacher. That particular person that day we will descend into the gutters with that person.”
GNAT has advised teachers to prioritize their safety, instructing them to leave school premises if they feel threatened or unsafe.
“We are telling our teachers when you go to school and you feel threatened tell your head and withdraw your service, period. Nobody can do you anything,” Mr. Musah emphasized.
The association is demanding that authorities take swift action to address the rising incidents of attacks on teachers and ensure perpetrators are brought to justice.
