A combined team of National Security operatives and Police officers today surrounded the residence of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The operation, which began early on Friday, May 23, 2025, has sparked widespread concern and protests from NPP supporters.
The reasons behind the raid remain unclear, but Chairman Wontumi, who was reportedly inside the house, assured officers that he would respond to their invitation on Monday, May 26, 2025.
NPP’s regional secretary, Kwame Adom-Appiah, who is also a member of Chairman Wontumi’s legal team, described the operation as “unnecessary and poorly handled.”
He questioned the need for such a large deployment, suggesting that a simple invitation would have sufficed.
As tensions escalated, party loyalists chanted slogans in defiance, and the NIB reportedly ordered the immediate withdrawal of all officers from the scene.
While the atmosphere has since calmed, a strong contingent of NPP supporters continues to maintain a presence around the residence.
