Tensions are running high in the Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipality following violent clashes between youth from the main township and the Zongo community.
The unrest was sparked by the death of 35-year-old Okada rider, Masawudu Issaka, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a scuffle with some youth from Adoagyiri last week.
The situation escalated into chaos as some youth from the Zongo community went on a rampage, destroying properties and setting multiple shops ablaze.
The recently constructed community astroturf was also vandalized during the mayhem. Two individuals were injured in the violence and are currently receiving treatment at the Nsawam Government Hospital.
“I will raise this issue in Parliament and make sure that the culprits are dealt with by the law,” said Member of Parliament Frank Annoh-Dompreh, who has pledged to support the victims and ensure justice for the bereaved family.
“I am pleading that I will help the victims with the small amount that I will get to help with their revival,”he added.
The Eastern-South Regional Police Commander, DCOP Ohene Boadi Bossman, has visited the area with reinforcements, appealing for calm and urging cooperation as investigations into the incident continue. The police presence has been increased in the area to prevent further violence.
The late Masawudu Issaka was laid to rest on Friday, May 23, with hundreds of mourners attending the funeral procession under tight security.
