Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been hospitalized after falling ill during interrogation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra.
According to his lawyer, Andy Appiah Kubi, Chairman Wontumi was rushed to a hospital for medical treatment after he fell ill while being questioned by EOCO officials. Appiah Kubi declined to disclose the name or location of the hospital where Boasiako is receiving treatment.
The interrogation is part of an ongoing investigation linked to alleged illegal mining activities.
Chairman Wontumi had previously been cautioned over accusations of mining without a license, polluting water bodies, and encroaching on forest reserves.
The NPP has reacted strongly to Boasiako’s arrest, with party officials accusing the government of engaging in politically motivated actions aimed at intimidating opposition figures. Scores of NPP supporters and party executives stormed the EOCO premises in protest, demanding Boasiako’s release.
The party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, warned that the NPP would resist any effort to weaponize state institutions against its members.
Former Greater Accra Regional Minister Titus Glover accused the ruling National Democratic Congress of orchestrating a “violent political witch-hunt” against Boasiako.
Mr.Boasiako’s lawyer, Appiah Kubi, stated that the interrogation has not been completed and that his client will return to EOCO once his condition improves.
Additionally, the lawyer revealed that a writ of summons has been filed by Exim Bank against Boasiako, and they are preparing to mount a defense.
