Australia has declared its intent to seek a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2029–2030 term, promising to amplify the voices of underrepresented regions and push for meaningful global peace reforms.
Speaking at the Conflict Prevention and Sustainable Peace Forum in Accra, H.E. Berenice Owen-Jones, Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, said the move reflects Australia’s “deep commitment to contributing to international peace and security.”
“Our candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the Security Council for the term 2029-2030 reflects our deep commitment to contributing to international peace and security,” she announced.
Highlighting the imbalance in global representation, Owen-Jones stressed that the Security Council must evolve to reflect today’s geopolitical realities:
“Australia wants greater permanent and non-permanent representation for Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Asia-Pacific. This body must represent the world as it is in the 21st century.”
Her comments come at a time when West Africa grapples with complex transitions, democratic instability, and growing insecurity. Australia’s candidacy signals not only diplomatic ambition but a drive to stand in solidarity with regions often sidelined in multilateral decision-making.
