A decongestion exercise in Kasoa’s Central Business District turned violent on Wednesday, May 28, resulting in injuries to four individuals.
The clash occurred between traders and members of the Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly’s task force.
The exercise, aimed at clearing unauthorized structures from pedestrian walkways, had proceeded without incident for two days prior. However, tensions escalated when traders resisted the removal of their tents, leading to a chaotic situation.
Three task force members and one trader were injured as traders hurled stones at the task force. The violence temporarily blocked the Kasoa-Bawjiase junction, disrupting traffic and drawing public concern.
Police intervention eventually restored calm, allowing the exercise to continue. The Kasoa Phone Dealers Association claimed they were not given sufficient time to dismantle their structures voluntarily, contributing to the confrontation.
The incident highlights the challenges faced by local authorities in enforcing urban planning regulations and the need for effective communication with traders.
