The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has assured party supporters that the party’s leadership is working to secure the release of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP.
Speaking to party faithfuls at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) office in Accra on Friday, May 30, Dr. Bawumia expressed concern over the GH₵50 million bail condition imposed on Wontumi by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). “I believe that this was just set to prevent his release,” he said.
Despite the challenges, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the importance of following the legal process and urged supporters to remain calm while steps are taken behind the scenes.
“We are going to follow the due process, the legal process, to make sure that he is released as soon as possible. I want to plead with all of you to remain calm as we work behind the scenes to make sure that he is out,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia further cautioned against taking the law into their own hands, saying, “I believe that we will be successful. But we have to be calm to make sure that we do not take the law into our own hands.”
Wontumi is currently being held at the NIB after being detained by EOCO as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged crimes, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.
Despite being granted bail, Wontumi remains in custody due to unmet bail conditions.
