Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), has publicly declared his innocence following his arraignment in connection with the $2.3 billion Sky Train project.
In a statement released on Friday, May 30, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi emphasized his commitment to transparency and accountability.
The Sky Train project, initiated in 2019 to revamp Ghana’s urban transport system, was suspended due to concerns over procurement and financial viability.
Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi, who served as Minister of Education under the John Agyekum Kufuor administration, is among former GIIF officials facing prosecution over the project’s collapse.
“I welcome the opportunity to clear my name and have full confidence in my innocence,” Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi stated, reiterating his plea of not guilty to all charges brought against him.
He expressed appreciation for the support received from family, friends, and legal counsel, noting that their encouragement has bolstered his resolve.
Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi also acknowledged backing from key figures within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), extending special thanks to Hon. Kennedy Agyapong for displaying “Santaclausian brotherliness” and Hon. Martin Kwaku Agyei Mensah Korsah for exemplifying “the enduring strength of family ties.”
“Their encouragement has strengthened my resolve to stay the course,” Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi said, describing the period following his arraignment as “challenging.” With his reputation at stake, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi remains resolute in his pursuit of justice.
