The legal team for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the bail conditions imposed by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is currently under investigation for multiple financial crimes, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.
According to Enoch Afoakwa, a member of Wontumi’s legal team, the bail conditions are “arbitrary,” “harsh,” and “excessive.”
Speaking on Channel One Newsroom, Afoakwa expressed frustration over the terms of the bail, questioning their fairness and legality. “It is arbitrary. It is harsh and it is excessive,” he stated emphatically.
Wontumi was granted bail in the sum of GHS50 million with sureties by EOCO on Wednesday, May 28. However, despite efforts by his legal team, he has been unable to meet the bail conditions and remains in custody.
Afoakwa urged law enforcement agencies to adhere to due process, emphasizing the need for fairness and impartiality in the application of legal procedures.
“We pray that law enforcement agencies should be minded of due process,” he added, highlighting concerns about potential bias in the handling of the case.
