The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, has advised the Minority Caucus to approach the courts for redress regarding the detention of NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, aka Chairman Wontumi, by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Hon. Ahiafor emphasized that Parliament lacks jurisdiction to intervene in EOCO’s bail decisions, stating, “I believe this is a matter that can adequately be addressed by the judiciary… I do not think Parliament has the authority to call for a review of that particular decision.”
The Minority had staged protests over Wontumi’s detention, with Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin saying, “I pray that my colleagues on the opposite side will support this, so that with one voice, EOCO will know that when it came to this matter — Chairman Wontumi — Parliament stood united in demanding fairness.”
Wontumi is being held on allegations of fraud, money laundering, and involvement in organised crime.
