In a show of determination, Minority Members of Parliament (MPs) marched to the Police Headquarters today to petition the Inspector General of Police over the Electoral Commission’s (EC) delay in declaring the parliamentary election results for the Ablekuma North constituency.
Addressing journalists at the Police Headquarters, Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh expressed concern over the prolonged delay, stating, “The absence of a declared MP for Ablekuma North constitutes a serious violation of the constitutional right to representation guaranteed under the 1992 constitution.”
Annoh-Dompreh called on the police to provide protection to the EC, enabling them to declare the results without hindrance.
“We urge the police to ensure that the EC is able to perform its constitutional duties without any obstruction,” he emphasized.
The delay in declaring the results has sparked tension, with both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) claiming victory in the constituency. The EC has faced challenges in collating results from some polling stations, further complicating the situation.
The Minority MPs’ petition to the Inspector General of Police underscores the urgency of the matter, with the people’s right to representation hanging in the balance.
