Stephen Ntim, the National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has temporarily stepped aside from his role to address health-related concerns. The announcement was made on Monday, June 16, 2025, in a statement issued by the party’s national leadership.
According to the statement, the decision follows medical advice from his personal physician, who recommended that he take time off to rest and undergo further medical evaluation.
Leadership Delegated as Party Navigates Transition
While Ntim remains chairman, the NPP noted that interim leadership responsibilities have been delegated to First Vice Chairman Danquah Smith Butey, in line with party protocol. The arrangement is expected to ensure continued smooth operations and preparation ahead of the 2026 general elections.
“Mr. Ntim has been an instrumental figure in the party’s organisation and strategic planning. We wish him a speedy recovery and remain confident in our ability to continue delivering on our mandate,” the party said in a statement signed by its General Secretary.
Health and Public Office: A Wider Conversation
Ntim’s temporary absence comes at a crucial moment for the NPP as the party intensifies its internal reorganisation and outreach efforts as the largest opposition party in Ghana. His situation has reignited public discourse on the health of political leaders and the importance of institutional resilience in times of transition. A longstanding figure in Ghanaian politics, Stephen Ntim was elected as NPP National Chairman in 2022, after several previous attempts. His tenure has been marked by efforts to unify party factions and strengthen grassroots structures following the NPP’s loss in the 2024 general elections, which brought the National Democratic Congress (NDC) back to power.
Party officials have assured members and the public that updates on Mr. Ntim’s health and return will be communicated in due course. In the meantime, the party continues preparations for upcoming constituency and regional activities.
