Ghana’s immediate past Education Minister and NPP Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe Constituency, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has officially declared his intention to run for the New Patriotic Party’s Flagbearer position ahead of the 2028 general elections.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, June 18, Dr. Adutwum formally announced his decision, making it clear he would join the race once nominations are officially opened by the party.
“With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party,” he wrote.
Dr. Adutwum is widely recognized for his transformative work in Ghana’s education sector, particularly in implementing the Free SHS policy and championing STEM education reforms.
He has built a reputation as a results-oriented public servant, which could be a key theme in his campaign.
Dr. Adutwum’s announcement closely follows the NPP’s confirmation of January 31, 2026, as the official date for its presidential primary in Accra.
With this declaration, Dr. Adutwum now joins a growing list of senior NPP figures openly expressing interest in leading the party into the next presidential election. Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia(the party’s 2024 flagbearer), Kennedy Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, Kwabena Adjei Agyapong and Boakye Agyarko are all expected to join the race.
