Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey has officially departed from Arsenal after his contract expired, marking the end of a five-year stint at the club.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the 32-year-old left Arsenal on a free transfer, with negotiations for a new deal having failed to reach an agreement. The club announced that they are still in talks with Partey, but an understanding could not be achieved, paving the way for his departure.
Throughout his time at Arsenal, Partey was linked with several top clubs, including Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus. Saudi Pro League clubs also showed interest in acquiring his services, highlighting the widespread demand for the talented midfielder.
Despite ongoing speculation, he remains a highly sought-after player with numerous options ahead of him. Arsenal’s official release list confirmed that he will leave as a free agent, with Christian Nørgaard set to join from Brentford as part of their squad reinforcement.
Last season was arguably Partey’s best since arriving from Atletico Madrid in 2020 for over £40 million. He made 52 appearances across all competitions, scored four goals, and provided three assists.
His contributions were vital in Arsenal’s successful run in the Champions League, notably playing a key role in their quarter-final victories over Real Madrid. His performances earned him praise from manager Mikel Arteta, who earlier hinted at the possibility of Partey remaining at the club.
Arteta acknowledged that negotiations over a new contract were progressing, stating, “Yes, there is progress with all the players,” but ultimately, no agreement was reached. The manager also expressed his desire for Partey to stay, describing the midfielder’s influence on the team as very clear.
However, the club’s new sporting director, Andrea Berta, was responsible for overseeing the contract discussions, which concluded without a renewal.
Arsenal is now focusing on squad restructuring, with close negotiations ongoing for Brentford’s Christian Nørgaard. Additionally, a formal announcement regarding the transfer of Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi is expected soon.
With Partey’s departure, Arsenal prepares to reshape their midfield options ahead of the upcoming season, aiming to maintain their competitive edge in domestic and European competitions.
