The Ghana Police Service has inaugurated a new 24-Hour Security Secretariat to lead the implementation of the government’s flagship 24-hour economy policy.
This was announced by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, during the passing-out ceremony of 1,194 new police recruits at the Police Training School in Accra.
Addressing the ceremony, the Minister emphasized the crucial role of security in the successful execution of the 24-hour policy, noting that “the Police Service has a monumental responsibility in ensuring safety and public order across all sectors of the economy, day and night.”
The newly established secretariat is expected to coordinate operational strategies, intelligence, and personnel deployment to support businesses and institutions operating under the 24-hour economy framework.
While welcoming the new recruits into the Police Service, Mr. Mubarak reminded them that their badge is not a license to intimidate citizens or act in ways that bring the name of the Service into disrepute. He urged them to render quality, professional service to the nation, especially at a time when Ghana is experiencing a changing face of crime.
“The demands on police personnel have never been greater,” he said. “We must live up to the legitimate expectations of the people, especially as manpower continues to dwindle in some specialized areas of the service.”
The Minister also stressed the need to restore the morale of serving officers and ensure continuous training and capacity-building across all units.
With this new initiative, the Police Service is expected to become a key pillar in the smooth rollout and sustainability of the 24-hour economy, ensuring businesses and citizens alike can operate and move safely, regardless of the time of day.
