Nana Akua Afriyie
New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, Nana Akua Afriyie, is set to contest in Friday’s crucial rerun electione across 19 polling stations, defying her party’s official boycott of the process.
Her decision comes as a surprise to many, given the NPP’s firm stance against the Electoral Commission’s (EC) directive to rerun the polls. The party has consistently rejected the exercise, labeling it unconstitutional and threatening legal action.
This follows months of intense disputes between the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the outcome of the December 2024 parliamentary elections. While the EC confirmed results in 18 of the 37 contested polling stations, it cited irregularities and a lack of proper verification in the remaining 19, necessitating a rerun to uphold electoral integrity.
Nana Akua Afriyie’s participation comes after the High Court in Accra dismissed her injunction application, which sought to halt the rerun. The court ruled that the EC holds a constitutional responsibility to ensure representation for the constituents, and delaying the process would deprive them of their parliamentary voice.
Despite this, the NPP maintains that proceeding with the rerun sets a troubling precedent, reiterating its refusal to participate.
Consequently, Ablekuma North remains without a Member of Parliament since December 2024 general election, leaving residents in a prolonged state of political uncertainty.
The EC, in a statement dated July 2, assured the public that adequate security measures are in place, in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, to guarantee a peaceful and transparent electoral process on July 11.
As the polls reopen, all eyes will be on Ablekuma North to see how this dramatic chapter in Ghana’s electoral history unfolds.
