The National Peace Council (NPC) has strongly condemned the violent incidents that marred the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, describing the attacks on journalists and individuals as a threat to Ghana’s peace and stability.
In a statement, the NPC urged all stakeholders to remain calm and exercise restraint, allowing the Electoral Commission and security agencies to carry out their duties peacefully. The Council welcomed the swift action taken by the Ghana Police Service in interdicting an officer involved in a viral video assaulting a journalist.
The NPC called on party leaders and supporters to unite against political violence, emphasizing the need for peaceful coexistence. The statement serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining peace and stability during electoral processes.
Calling for justice, the NPC encouraged the police to conduct thorough investigations and bring all perpetrators to book.
“The NPC is closely monitoring the situation and calls on all stakeholders to prioritize peace and uphold democratic values throughout the electoral process,” the release concluded.
The rerun which took place in 19 polling stations, followed unresolved disputes from the December 2024 general elections and has been fraught with tension.
The Council’s intervention adds to growing calls from civil society and political figures urging calm and accountability.
