
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced the opening of nomination for its upcoming presidential primary on Monday, July 29, 2025. The nomination process will be closed a month later on August 28, 2025.
According to a schedule timeline released on Friday, July 25, the largest opposition party is expected to conduct vetting of the prospective candidates from September 15 to 22 pending any unforeseen circumstances.
Recommendations of the Vetting Committee’s Report is expected to be presented to the party’s National Council (NC) which is the second highest decision-making body on September 29 for the necessary actions.
The party will further open the window of opportunity for the submission of petitions if any between September 30 to 3rd October.
This will be closely followed by the meetings of the National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council slated for October 7 and the Publication of Nominees on October 8.
Meanwhile, the Presidential Election’s Committee will hold Balloting on October 10 and notice of poll on October 17.
The New Patriotic Party announced few months ago that the party will elect it’s presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections on January 31, 2026, which is in line with the Constitution of the party.
According to the Constitution under Article 12(1), the election of the Party’s Presidential Candidate shall be held not later than twenty-four (24) months from the date of the national election.
The date and venue for the election shall be decided by the National Council, provided, however, that the National Council may, on appropriate occasion, vary the date.
Meanwhile, the party has however set February 14, 2026 for any possible run off.
