A young man believed to be in his late 20s, has been allegedly shot and killed in a suspected robbery attack at Nyariga, a community in the Bolgatanga Municipality.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, August 1, 2025, involved two men riding a motorbike who were attacked by unknown assailants.
The deceased had been identified as Junior Ayine Akuribire, a resident of Nyariga while his companion, identified as Anaba survived the attack.
They were said to be riding the motorbike at the time of the attack.
Anaba is currently assisting police with investigations.
Mr Joseph Abenkaabe, the Assemblyman for the area, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that preliminary information gathered indicates that the assailants opened fire on the riders, instantly killing the pillion passenger.
He said he was informed of the incident by the Tindaana (Spiritual Head) of the community, who had heard gunshots near his house during the night but only discovered the severity of the situation when he visited his farm in the morning and came upon the crime scene.
“The Tindaana called me this morning after discovering the body and informed me about what had happened,” Mr Abenkaabe recounted.
He said the police were immediately notified and responded by picking up the surviving rider for questioning to assist with ongoing investigations.
Mr Abenkaabe noted that the incident adds to a growing number of armed robbery attacks in the area, and called for immediate intervention to address the security concerns.
“We need urgent support from the authorities. I am appealing for the establishment of a police barrier and enhanced night patrols to curb the increasing crime rate in the area,” he said.
Police investigations are ongoing.
