The Electoral Commission (EC) has extended nominations for Tamale Central by-election by 10 days following withdrawal of two candidates.
On Wednesday, September 10, 2025 two of the three candidates who had been nominated for the election withdrew their nominations after the close of nominations, leaving NDC’s Prof Seidu Alidu as sole contestant.
In a statement issued by the Commission on Friday, September 12, it explained that in accordance with Article 50 (2) of the 1992 Constitution a further period of ten days has been permitted for other persons who wish to file nominations to do so.
Article 50(2) stipulates that where two or more candidates are nominated at the close of nomination, but before election day only one candidate stands nominated, a further period of ten (10) days shall be allowed for nomination of other Candidates and it shall not be lawful for any person nominated within that period of ten days (10) to withdraw his/her nomination.
“In line with Article 50 (2) of the 1992 Constitution, the Commission will re-open nominations for ten (10) days,” the statement said.
The Nominations will be received at the Tamale Metropolitan Office of the Commission from September 12 to September 21, 2025 between the hours of 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm each day.
Interested candidates are required to download the nomination forms from the Commission’s website (www.ec.gov.gh) from September 12 to September 21, 2025.
A prospective candidate has the choice to personally deliver or cause to be delivered on his/her behalf, by either the proposer or seconder of his/her nomination. The completed nomination forms must be submitted to the Returning Officer at the Tamale Metropolitan Office of the Commission within the stipulated dates and times.
The nomination forms for each candidate shall be witnessed by the signature or mark of two registered voters as proposer and seconder, and supported by eighteen (18) other registered voters in the constituency to assent to the nominations.
The nomination forms shall also be endorsed with the candidate’s consent to the nomination.
A candidate shall at the time of submitting his/her completed nomination forms, provide the Returning Officer with two (2) copies of a recent post card (bust sized) photograph against a red background, showing his/her full face and ears.
The filing fee for the election is GHC 10,000.00 per Candidate. However, the filing fee for female candidates and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) is GHC 7,500.00. Completed nomination forms are expected to be delivered in quadruplicate.
The contestants for the People’s National Convention (PNC) and the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) who had earlier completed the filing process on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, officially pulled out of the race by writing to the EC through their respective general secretaries.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) earlier announced their decision not to contest the seat in solidarity with the NDC who lost their incumbent MP Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed to a devastating helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
