Media General’s Godwin Asediba has been crowned the PAV Ansah/GJA Best journalist of the year 2024 at the 29th GJA Media Awards, held at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Saturday, November 8,2025.
The award, considered the highest honor in Ghanaian journalism, recognizes Asedeba’s exceptional contributions to the media landscape, particularly in documentary reporting and human-interest story telling . His work has consistently highlighted social issues and amplifies the voices of undeserved communities .
Asediba’s recognition comes on the heels of his recent win as the 2025 BBC News Komla Dumor Award recipient, which currently places him on internship with the BBC in London.
In an interview on TV3’s news 360, Godwin expressed his fulfillment. “ This is humbling, I am really happy, I feel all the hard work I have put into telling the stories are coming into fruition” he said.
Again, he encouraged journalists especially the younger ones to be exceptional in their work. “You should dare to be different, once you go with that line and also put in the work, you will definitely stand out and be like me one day.”
This year’s GJA Awards ceremony was held under the theme “Safeguarding Ghana’s Future: The Role of the Media in Promoting Peace, Security and the Fight Against Galamsey.” The event brought together journalists, media executives, and dignitaries, including President John Dramani Mahama, who served as the special guest of honour and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II .
Out of 321 entries, Asedeba emerged as the top honoree, also winning Best Television Documentary Reporting. In his acceptance speech read by his colleague, George Kwaning, he reaffirmed his commitment to ethical journalism and pledged to continue telling stories that drive change.
Other notable winners included Doreen Ampofo of GBC, named Best Female Journalist of the Year, and Severious Kale-Dery of the Daily Graphic, who won Best Print News Reporting. The top three awardees will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Turkey, sponsored by Turkish Airlines.
The GJA Awards continue to serve as a beacon for journalistic integrity and innovation, celebrating excellence in journalism, promoting accountability, innovation, and national development.
