The Ministry of Education has condemned recent violent clashes involving senior high school students in the Central Region, describing the incident as unacceptable and deeply concerning.
Deputy Minister for Education, Clement Abas Apaak, said the disturbing scenes captured in widely circulated videos undermine efforts to maintain discipline and ensure student safety across the country’s second-cycle institutions.
The violence reportedly occurred during the District Schools Athletics Games held in Agona Swedru. Students from Obrachire Senior High Technical School and Swedru School of Business were said to have engaged in a confrontation that escalated into the throwing of stones and the use of sticks.
In response, the Minister directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to launch an immediate investigation into the matter. A high-level meeting involving the GES Director-General, regional and district education officials, as well as heads of the affected schools, has been convened to assess the situation and determine appropriate disciplinary measures.
Dr. Apaak emphasized that the government is treating the issue with the utmost seriousness and warned that any students found culpable will face sanctions in accordance with established regulations.
Some students reportedly sustained injuries during the clash and were taken to hospital for treatment. Authorities have indicated that those affected are currently stable.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has also begun investigations into the incident to identify those responsible and ensure accountability.
Education authorities say measures are being reviewed to strengthen supervision and security at inter-school events, as concerns grow over rising incidents of indiscipline among students.
