The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has publicly rejected allegations circulating in a viral video that it deleted outstanding salary arrears owed to nurses and teachers in Ghana. The Department says the claims are entirely false and misleading.
In a statement titled “Misinformation Alert,” CAGD said the video, reportedly linked to a broadcast from Sompa FM, wrongly suggested that the agency had removed arrears from the payroll records of public sector workers. The Department clarified that it does not have the authority to cancel, delete, or unilaterally remove salary arrears owed to government employees.
According to CAGD, any suggestion that it can take such action is a serious misrepresentation of its legal mandate and statutory functions. The agency stressed that spreading unverified claims like this can create unnecessary anxiety and confusion among nurses, teachers, and other public sector workers.
“The claim is misleading and inaccurate,” the statement said, warning that misinformation of this kind could undermine public confidence in government institutions.
CAGD urged media outlets, content creators, and the public to verify information with relevant authorities before sharing or broadcasting it, in order to curb the spread of misinformation and disinformation.
The Department also reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability, assuring the public that it continues to discharge its responsibilities within the framework of Ghana’s public financial management laws.
