Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has secured rare access to two Ghanaian nationals being held as prisoners of war in Ukraine, marking what officials describe as a significant diplomatic breakthrough in efforts to bring them home.
The minister gained entry to a high-security detention facility in Kyiv during an official visit, where he met the two detainees. According to Mr. Ablakwa, both men are alive and in stable condition.
He expressed appreciation to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha for granting the unusual request, noting that such access to foreign prisoners of war is not commonly extended. He described the development as a reflection of the cordial relations between Ghana and Ukraine.
Mr. Ablakwa said the Ghanaian government is actively pursuing diplomatic channels to secure the men’s release on humanitarian grounds. He added that Ukrainian authorities have respected the detainees’ rights in line with international law.
The identities of the two Ghanaians have not been publicly disclosed due to security considerations. However, the minister revealed that they are eager to return home and have expressed a desire to use their experience to raise awareness about the dangers of trafficking networks that lure vulnerable Africans into foreign conflicts.
During his visit, Mr. Ablakwa also held high-level discussions with President Zelenskyy on bilateral cooperation, including trade, agriculture, and humanitarian issues. He reiterated Ghana’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens abroad and ensuring their safe return.
The case comes amid broader concerns about the recruitment of African nationals into the Russia-Ukraine war through irregular channels. Ghanaian authorities say they remain vigilant and are working closely with international partners to prevent further exploitation.
The government has assured Ghanaians that it will continue to engage Ukrainian officials until the two citizens are safely repatriated.
