The Accra Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing a High Court injunction that prohibits the planned “Stop Galamsey” demonstration slated for today, Friday, February 27, 2026.
A statement released by the police on Thursday, February 26, said a High Court in Accra on 24th February 2026 granted an Order for Prohibition restraining the conveners of the protest from staging the demonstration on the said date. The police said the injunction was issued in the interest of public order and safety.
According to the police, the planned protest’s timing coinciding with the State of the Nation Address (SONA) could pose potential security challenges, prompting the court’s decision to bar the event.
In recent days, organizers had taken to social media alleging they had not been formally served with any court documents. However, the police clarified that the court order had been duly served on the conveners, urging them to respect the court’s directive.
“The Accra Regional Police Command wishes to inform the general public that … the Order, which was duly served on the conveners, prohibits the demonstration on the said date in the interest of public order and safety,” the statement said.
While today’s protest is barred, the police said there remains scope for engagement with the organizers to agree on a mutually convenient date for the demonstration in accordance with the Public Order Act.
The police command urged the public to comply with the court order and avoid any activities that could lead to breaches of the peace.
The “Stop Galamsey” demonstration was part of broader civic efforts to call for stronger action against illegal small-scale mining activities a major environmental and economic issue across Ghana. Recent government enforcement measures and community responses have underscored the ongoing national debate over how best to tackle the galamsey menace.
