The Electoral Commission of Ghana has declared Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) the winner of the Ayawaso East by-election, securing a decisive victory in Tuesday’s poll.
The contest, held in the Ayawaso East Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, was organized to fill the parliamentary vacancy created by the death of the area’s MP, Mahama Naser Toure, earlier this year.
Clear Margin
Official results show Baba Jamal polling 10,884 votes about 63 per cent of valid ballots cast comfortably ahead of his closest challenger, Baba Ali Yussif of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who secured 4,009 votes. The remaining ballots were shared among other candidates.
Out of nearly 50,000 registered voters, just over 17,000 ballots were cast, with 16,928 deemed valid and 120 rejected. The relatively low turnout has drawn commentary from political observers, some of whom cited timing and voter apathy as possible factors.
Peaceful Process
The election was conducted under tight security but remained largely peaceful throughout the day, with no major incidents reported. Party agents and observers described the process as orderly, and the results were accepted without immediate dispute.
Victory Message
In his post-election remarks, Baba Jamal thanked constituents for renewing their confidence in him and pledged to prioritize development and unity in the constituency. He described the outcome as a collective victory for residents and supporters, promising to work closely with community stakeholders to advance local projects.
With the declaration complete, Baba Jamal is expected to be sworn into Parliament in the coming days to resume representation of Ayawaso East.
