A violent protest by some youth in Zabzugu, a town in Ghana’s Northern Region, has resulted in the death of one person and left two others seriously injured.
The unrest was triggered by the President’s nomination of Municipal and District Chief Executives, specifically Daniel Lakob Tanei, which the protesting youth vehemently opposed.
The youth took to the streets, blocking roads and issuing threats to destroy properties belonging to the party and other government institutions.
Despite the initial intervention by security personnel, the situation escalated when the youth regrouped on the outskirts of the town. They began firing gunshots and harassing passersby, creating a chaotic and fearful atmosphere.
During the mayhem, a man riding a motorbike with two women, one of whom was approximately seven to eight months pregnant, was stopped by the protesting youth.
When the rider refused to comply with their demands, the youth opened fire. The pregnant woman was fatally shot, while the rider and the other woman sustained serious injuries.
The body of the deceased has been taken to the Yendi Hospital morgue, and the injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at the Zabzugu Hospital.
The situation in Zabzugu remains tense, with security forces on high alert to prevent any further violence or possible reprisals.
