The Greater Accra Regional Chair of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Sarah Oye Owiredu, is calling on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to urgently address long-standing challenges preventing female teachers in rural areas from transferring to other regions.
Her plea highlights the emotional and physical toll on female educators, many of whom are separated from their families or endure grueling daily commutes that impact both their well-being and professional performance.
Speaking at the Accra Metro West GNATLAS Roundabout Conference, Madam Owiredu expressed concern over continued resistance from some district directors who refuse to release teachers—despite promises made at the local level. She pointed to the rigid enforcement of the three-year mandatory service policy as a major roadblock to resolving these issues.
She urged the GES to act swiftly and compassionately, emphasizing that supporting female teachers in this regard is not just a policy matter but a step toward greater gender equity in education.
