A devastating flood that swept through parts of the Greater Accra Region on Sunday, May 18, has claimed the lives of five people.
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) confirmed the fatalities, with three deaths reported in the Ga East Municipality and two in Adenta.
According to NADMO’s Director of Inspectorate, Richard Amo Yartey, the disaster was not caused by heavy rainfall, but rather the inadequacy of the region’s drainage infrastructure.
Despite a relatively low rainfall of 25 millimetres, the floodwaters wreaked havoc on several communities, including Adenta, Kaneshie, Weija, Adabraka, and parts of Tema.
The flood left a trail of destruction, with roads rendered impassable, vehicles submerged, and thousands of residents stranded. NADMO has attributed the severity of the flood to poor urban planning and inadequate drainage systems.
The organisation is calling for stricter enforcement of building regulations and better urban planning to prevent similar disasters in the future.
NADMO has also urged citizens to stay informed about weather warnings and potential risks to mitigate the impact of future floods.
