Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi, has been charged with publication of false news by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB). His lawyer, Clement Opoku Gyamfi, confirmed the development on Friday, May 23, 2025 to the media.
According to Mr. Gyamfi, Kumi was interrogated by NIB officials over comments he made in media interviews and on his X account, as well as a petition he forwarded to the presidency regarding the committee probing the possible removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
The lawyer stated that Kumi’s caution statement has been taken, and a bail application has been submitted to the NIB.
Mr. Gyamfi expressed confidence that his client would be granted bail, considering the matter is classified as a misdemeanor.
Kumi’s arrest has sparked widespread criticism, with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) condemning the action as intimidation of opposition elements. The party has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of suppressing dissenting voices.
The arrest comes on the heels of Kumi’s petition to President John Mahama, urging him to dissolve the committee investigating the removal of the Chief Justice.
Kumi alleged misconduct by committee members, citing a meeting between some members and the petitioner’s lawyer, which he claimed could compromise the inquiry’s credibility.
