A dramatic showdown is unfolding at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) headquarters, where Minority Members of Parliament have announced plans to stage a sit-in protest over the detention of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Wontumi was picked up by EOCO on May 27 and has been granted bail of GH¢50 million with two sureties, which the Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin described as “excessive and unjust”.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Afenyo-Markin said, “We are all going to sleep there with him. We don’t have GH¢50 million worth of property. EOCO must do the right thing.”
The Minority has also boycotted parliamentary proceedings until Wontumi is released.
Afenyo-Markin warned that the treatment of Wontumi could set a dangerous precedent, saying, “We must send a strong signal not only to EOCO but to all state institutions: respect the law, follow due process, and treat every citizen with dignity.”
The protest highlights growing tensions between the Minority and EOCO, with the lawmakers demanding fairness and due process in the handling of Wontumi’s case.
