The Minister for Employment, Jobs, and Labour Relations, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, has made a passionate appeal to the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to reconsider its decision to embark on a nationwide strike.
The industrial action, slated for June 9, 2025, is in response to unresolved grievances over working conditions.
Dr. Pelpuo emphasized the far-reaching consequences of such an action on the healthcare system, urging stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue.
“When we embark on the strike, it has a total effect on society. In whatever sector you belong to, it has a direct effect on society and development,” he cautioned.
The Minister further stressed the need for collaborative efforts to resolve disputes, stating, “This means that employers and stakeholders must always work together to conclude when there is no need for a strike. Eventually, the government must listen to them, the health authorities must listen to them.”
The GRNMA’s planned industrial action has sparked a rift within the nursing community, with other unions dissociating themselves from the strike.
A joint statement by some nursing associations cited disagreements over the interpretation of previous collective agreements, prompting GRNMA to accuse them of undermining the push for improved working conditions.
