The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has filed a motion at the High Court in Accra seeking a review of the bail conditions imposed on him by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
According to the application, filed on May 30, 2025, Wontumi’s legal team argues that the GH₵50 million bail is excessive and intended to prevent his release. The motion requests the court to reconsider the bail terms based on the grounds outlined in the accompanying affidavit.
The court is scheduled to hear the motion on June 3, 2025, at 9:00 am. Wontumi’s legal team is expected to present arguments seeking a reduction or modification of the current bail conditions.
Meanwhile, a delegation of party leaders, including former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, was unable to meet with Wontumi at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headquarters in Accra.
Despite being granted permission to enter the NIB premises, the party leaders were told that the crowd was too large, and arrangements would need to be made for them to meet with Wontumi.
Wontumi is currently being held at the NIB following his detention by EOCO as part of an ongoing criminal investigation. His lawyers have expressed concerns about the bail conditions, arguing that they are unrealistic and intended to keep him in custody.
