In a revealing account, President John Dramani Mahama has credited the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, with playing a decisive role in his decision to accept the role of running mate to the late President John Evans Atta Mills in the 2008 general elections.
During a courtesy call by the Asantehene at the Jubilee House on Monday, June 2, Mahama recounted the events that led to his eventual acceptance of the offer. Initially, Mahama had declined multiple approaches from the Mills campaign team, citing his intention to step away from active politics.
“I had already made up my mind to leave politics,” Mahama said, recalling his response to the first overture from Prof. Mills. Despite additional pressure from key party stalwarts, Mahama remained resolute in his decision.
However, a meeting with the Asantehene at Manhyia Palace marked a turning point. According to Mahama, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II told him, “When your country calls you, you must respond.” The Asantehene drew from his own experience of being called to lead the Asante Kingdom, emphasizing the importance of answering the national call to duty.
“Otumfuo said, ‘I promised President Mills that I would speak to you. When I return to Accra, I want your final answer,'” Mahama recounted. Following the Asantehene’s intervention, Mahama eventually agreed to serve as Mills’ running mate, albeit with the caveat that he would serve for only one term.
“Otumfuo was instrumental in me becoming Prof. Mills’ running mate, and everything after that became history,” Mahama acknowledged, expressing gratitude for the Asantehene’s friendship.
“Your Majesty, thank you very much and I truly appreciate your friendship,” he added.
