The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has rejected a government proposal to delay new working conditions until 2026, describing the move as unfair.
The proposal was made during an emergency meeting between the Ministry of Health and GRNMA leaders on Monday, June 9, 2025.
According to GRNMA Vice President Samuel Akoto Alagkora, the government cited a lack of funds as the reason for the delay.
“We submitted our demands in January, hoping they would be included in this year’s budget. But now we’re told there is no money and the changes may only come in 2026. That’s not fair,” Alagkora said.
“The government wants to avoid paying us for past months by acting like we just started negotiating now,” he added.
The GRNMA’s National Council will review the proposal and decide on the next course of action. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has expressed willingness to engage in further talks.
“We are not forcing our position on them,” Ministry spokesperson Tony Goodman said. “If they have other ideas, we will consider them. That is how negotiations work.”
The nationwide strike by GRNMA members continues, with the union demanding improved working conditions. The Parliament’s Health Committee has also expressed readiness to intervene if negotiations fail.
