Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, Berenice Owen-Jones
In a renewed effort to tackle food insecurity, Australia and Ghana are placing private sector investment in irrigation at the heart of their evolving agricultural partnership.
During a high-level meeting with Minister of Food and Agriculture Hon. Eric Opoku, the Australian High Commissioner emphasized that investment in irrigation infrastructure is a critical area for Ghana to achieve climate resilience and sustained agricultural productivity.
This strategic priority aligns with a growing call for public-private partnerships, echoed by stakeholders in both countries.
Australia, having turned years of drought into record productivity, sees Ghana’s underdeveloped irrigation potential as an opportunity for shared innovation.
This focus complements ongoing investments through AAPCRA and projects that build local capacity, including a solar-powered aquaponics project and hydroponic vegetable gardens supporting youth and women farmers in northern Ghana.
The push for irrigation investment is expected to attract international agribusinesses, leveraging Ghana’s fertile potential and regional influence.
