Effua Ghartey, GBA President
The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has reiterated its call for a review of the decision to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Speaking at the 43rd Martyrs’ Day commemoration, GBA President Effua Ghartey expressed serious concerns about the suspension’s potential impact on the judiciary, warning that it could set a troubling precedent for Ghana’s legal system.
The commemoration honored the memory of three High Court judges – Justices Frederick Opoku Sarkodie, Cecilia Koranteng-Addow, and Kwadwo Agyei Agyepong – who were abducted and murdered on June 30, 1982.
Effua Ghartey emphasized the importance of safeguarding the independence and credibility of Ghana’s judiciary, urging stakeholders to reconsider the decision.
“In the spirit of reconciliation, we hope the various calls for a reconsideration of the Chief Justice’s suspension will not be ignored, especially given the precedent it sets. We yearn for peace and remain committed to pursuing it,” she said.
