The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced a rerun of the parliamentary election in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency. This decision follows disputes over the credibility of the December 7, 2024, general election results.
In a press release dated July 2, 2025, and signed by Deputy Commissioner in charge of Operations, Mr. Samuel Tettey, the Commission confirmed that the rerun will take place on Friday, July 11, 2025.
The decision, according to the EC, was reached after a follow-up meeting with representatives of the two main political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), held on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.
The dispute arose after the NDC raised concerns over the use of scanned Pink Sheets from 37 polling stations. The party claimed these documents, which were provided by the NPP, lacked proper verification. The NDC demanded a complete rerun in all 37 polling stations, a request the Commission ultimately rejected.
The NPP, on the other hand, argued that only three polling station results were yet to be collated to finalize the outcome. They maintained that the scanned Pink Sheets had already been verified by NDC agents during the collation process, an argument the EC dismissed.
In its clarification, the EC explained that the scanned Pink Sheets were used during the collation process after physical copies were destroyed when political party supporters stormed the collation centre.
After thorough deliberations, the EC resolved to rerun the election in 19 of the 37 polling stations, stating that although the scanned results from these stations had been approved by both party agents, they lacked verification by the respective Presiding Officers.
The Commission added that the remaining 18 polling station results, although also scanned, had been duly verified by both agents and Presiding Officers, and would therefore not be subject to a rerun.
The EC has assured the public of its commitment to transparency, fairness, and integrity throughout the electoral process.
The Ghana Police Service has been called upon to provide adequate security to ensure a peaceful and orderly conduct of the rerun.
