A disturbing incident of violence marred the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun at the St. Peter’s polling station yesterday.
A group of unidentified men, described as macho men, stormed the polling station, attacking several individuals, including former MP Mavis Hawa Koomson and NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Afriyie.
According to eyewitnesses, the attackers arrived in a well-coordinated manner, causing widespread fear and confusion among voters. The violence temporarily halted the voting process, with security personnel rushing to the scene to restore order.
Details of the incident indicate that Ms. Afriyie and a female party agent suffered facial injuries and visible swelling. Ms. Koomson’s condition remains unclear at the time of reporting.
The police have yet to confirm any arrests, but investigations are ongoing to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety and security of voters and political figures during the election process. Authorities are urged to take necessary measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
The rerun in 19 polling stations was necessitated by the need to resolve electoral disputes from the December 7, 2024, general elections, which left Ablekuma North without parliamentary representation for months.
